What is it?               “The essence of a Shed is not a building, but the connections and relationships between its members” Men’s Sheds are community spaces for men to connect, converse and createSheds are whatever the members want them to beOur Shed is for over 50’s males to get together pursue practical interests at leisure, to share knowledge, practice skills and enjoy making and mending things, or just hanging out together.Sheds can get involved in community projects too: restoring village features, helping maintain parks and green spaces, and building things for schools, libraries and individuals in need.
Why is it? “There are many Men’s Sheds in the UK with female members, but most Men’s Sheds exist for the benefits they bring to men’s health and wellbeing”. For a long time, research has shown the negative impact of loneliness and isolation on a person’s health and wellbeing.Surveys from mental health charities are finding that millions of people report feeling lonely on a daily basis.Men typically find it more difficult to build social connections, and rarely share personal concerns about health and personal worries. It is not the case for all men, but for some, when retirement, redundancy, or unemployment comes, it can feel like their personal identity and purpose is lost. Men’s Sheds can change all of that.
